DESCRIPTION:Manternach Dream loop is well known to hikers. Here we propose an enhanced version also traversing the nature reserve Manternacher Fiels but extending further both eastwards and southwards. \nDuck soup for our standards but not completely effortless as\, if of little substance\, there are continuous ups and downs. \nThere is a train from and to Luxembourg every half and hour and the trip also takes about half an hour. I plan to be on the 10:43 train. If the trains do not suit you\, check also the buses. \n

So no more info here in terms of a description. \nSteep climb over the first kilometre or so\, the rest is easy peasy. \nWe will visit the nature reserve Schlammwiss\, waterproof boots are advisable. \nI will take the 10:40 train from Luxembourg (22 min). \nThis one is not a loop. To return from Munsbach (to either Luxembourg or Roodt\, if you leave your car there) there is a train every half an hour and buses too. \n

DESCRIPTION:As the days grow bigger so does our appetite for adventure. A long but flat one. \nAround the picturesque town of Rochefort\, Belgium\, there are all manners of caves and holes. \nThe most touristic ones are either closed in winter or open for guided tours a couple of times over the weekend. \nWe will visit a few of the rest and then will go for a beer. \nThis one is not about walking but about exploring. We will take it easy. Better book the whole day. \nI will probably take the train from Luxembourg at 9:11. It arrives to Rochefort-Jemelle (Belgium) at 10:32. The return ticket goes for about €20. To come back home there is a train every hour or so. \n \n  \n \n

DESCRIPTION:Gréngewald in the north-east and Bambësch in the north-west are the two largest contiguous woods around Luxembourg town. But what about the southern side\, are not there any forests in the area? \nWell\, this is what we are set to determine in another of our reconnaissance expeditions two days after the little birds get married. Starting from Merl\, we will head south-west to explore\, clockwise\, in the following order: Ënneschte Bësch\, Leidelenger Bësch\, Beetebuerger Bësch and the Kockelscheuer. \nWhat are we going to find down there? No clue\, but it should be civilised enough for our standards\, I guess. In any case\, this one is pretty flat. \nHowever\, a loop it is not: We start from the community gardens in Merl (off rue des Celtes) and end up at the Kockelscheuer P&R\, both well served by public transport. If you come by car\, you are probably better off by leaving it at the destination point. \n

SUMMARY:Premiumwanderweg Loreley Extratour (15 km hike)
DESCRIPTION:A fantastic hike proposed by Olivier as a continuation of this Saturday’s promenade in Koblenz. \nLoreley is a large rock on the bank at a narrows of the Rhine River near Sankt Goarshausen\, Germany. The rock produces an echo and is associated with the legend of a beautiful maiden who threw herself into the Rhine in despair over a faithless lover and was transformed into a siren who lured fishermen to destruction. Loreley has been declared a World Heritage site by the UNESCO. \nClimbing from the Rhine to the rock may prove a bit challenging\, the rest should be all right. The GPX file. \nOlivier and others will be staying in Koblenz and making this a weekend-long trip. There is a youth hostel in Koblenz and other accommodation options\, including popular home-staying sites\, are also affordable. \nSankt Goarhausen is only 30 km away from Koblenz. Olivier can take up to 3 people from Koblenz to the starting point and then back to Luxembourg. Here is the link to the carpool. \nTraveling from Koblenz to the starting point by public transport is also feasible. There are trains between Koblenz and Sankt Goar every hour. The trip takes 25 minutes. Once in Sankt Goar\, you need to take the ferry across the Rhine to Sankt Goarshausen. There is one every 20 minutes. Once there head to the Runder Turm. \n

SUMMARY:Koblenz\, where the Rhine meets the Moselle (14 km urban promenade)
DESCRIPTION:At the confluence of the Rhine and the Moselle there is the picturesque city of Koblenz\, the gate to the Upper Middle Rhine Valley UNESCO World Heritage. \nStarting from the train station\, we will climb our way up to the Ehrenbreitstein Fortress\, across the Rhine\, from where we will have a stunning view of the city. On our way to the Deutsches Eck\, right at the confluence of the two rivers\, we will visit the gardens of the Kurfürstliches Palace. \nThis should leave us ample time to explore the Old Town\, together or on your own. \nThe train trip from Luxembourg takes slightly over two hours each way. At the time of this writing\, the return ticket costs €25 at bahn.com. It can be even cheaper if several tickets are purchased together. I will probably take the 9:33 train from Luxembourg and return at 19:19 but feel free to make your own arrangements. \n \n  \nThe link to the carpool. \n  \n \n  \nWe will be hiking in the same area on the following day. This opens the possibility of a weekend-long trip.

DESCRIPTION:Lee meaning ridge in Luxembourgish\, with its ca. 54 km\, the Lee Trail is one of the most emblematic hiking paths in Luxembourg. \nSo far we have done the third leg between Kautenbach and Goebelsmühle\, the second between Goebelsmühle and Michelau and a custom-made loop around Molberlee. \nNow we propose to complete the trail by walking its first leg between Michelau and Ettelbruck\, featuring the Victor Hugo Trail and the Patton Memorial. \nThe first kilometer is a hard ascent and between the second and third there is a moderate ascent. The rest should be fairly easy for our standards. Check the ups and downs. \nThe 10:15 train from Luxembourg arrives to Michelau at 10:50 and takes 35 minutes. \nThis one is not a loop. There are numerous trains and buses to return from Ettelbruck to Luxembourg. \n

DESCRIPTION:Starting from the Palais Grand-Ducal we will take the Chemin de la Corniche all the way to the Casemates du Bock to have a view of\, that bestselling postcard of Luxembourg\, the Grund and the Plateau du Rham. We will then head to Fondation Pescatore via Place du Théâtre and take the panoramic lift down into Pfaffental and then the funicular up to Kirchberg. There we will visit the Fort Niedergrünewald\, the Fort Obergrünewald and the Fort Thüngen/Trois Glands. Next\, we will take the path down to Tour Malakoff and then up to Fort Parkhöhe to next head to the Plateau du Rham via Fort Rubamprez. This will be followed by a brief incursion into the Grund and the Vallé de la Pétrusse. Finally\, we will climb up to Gëlle Fra and back to the palace. \nAn excellent opportunity to discover new places in Luxembourg and contemplate the city from different angles. \n

SUMMARY:Christmas Market in Strasbourg (16 km urban promenade)
DESCRIPTION:Strasbourg prides itself for being the Christmas capital of Europe. Indeed\, first held in 1570\, its Christkindelsmärik (Christmas market)\, is the oldest and probably the most impressive within the current borders of France. \nWe will initiate our\, completely flat\, urban promenade in front of the Cathedral at 11:30 to then visit la Petite France\, berges de l’Ill\, parc de la Citadelle\, parc de l’Orangerie\, parc du Contades and place Kleber. \nJust a little taste of what this beautiful and vibrant city has to offer. SUMMARY:Pilgrimage to Fisterra (22 km hike)
DESCRIPTION:We will walk all along the shores of A Costa da Morte from Lires to Fisterra. On our way we will encounter breathtaking landscapes\, cliffs\, beaches and waterfalls. \nFisterra (Land’s End) is the actual destination of the Caminho de Santiago\, a pilgrimage that has had a very deep meaning from prehistory. Pilgrims wanted to see the place where the Sun sinks into the Atlantic Ocean for they believed this to be the location of the other world\, the place where we will all go when we die. \nThe difficulty is moderate. Rain and wind are to be expected\, though\, and we will do a few kilometres on sandy beaches\, whereas gorse can add some extra difficulty. \nThis is not a loop so the carpooling will involve some extra logistics. \nI will be driving to Galicia on the 5th and plan to return on the 15th. I will probably spend one night half way on each of the trips\, somewhere around south-western France. Alternatively\, if we take turns driving\, we can try and make the whole trip in one go. I could also provide accommodation for up to four people. \nFor those opting for a weekend-long trip\, there are four airports in Galicia: A Corunha (LCG)\, Santiago de Compostela (SCQ)\, Vigo (VGO) and Porto (OPO). The first three are located on the Spanish side and are only reachable via Madrid or Barcelona. The last one is on the Portuguese side and offers several direct flights per day to and from Luxembourg. \nIf anyone else joins us\, we will plan other activities. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Gréngewald/Laangmuer from Kirchberg (20 km hike)
DESCRIPTION:  \n\nWhen people think about after-work hiking/jogging/cycling in the forest\, they think Bambësch. But what about the largest suburban forest in Luxembourg\, the Grünewald? Spanning all the way from Weirmerskirch to Bourglinster\, the Grünewald is indeed full of possibilities. \nIn fact\, this will be the fourth time that we organise a long hike (over 20 km) in the area having done a different thing each time. This time we will start right from the RTL towers in Kirchberg to go all across the protected natural woods of Laangmuer and the Schetzelklaus and back. \nThe ups and downs. \nBus 18 should arrive at the stop Léon Thyes at 9:53\, from there to the starting point it is a 3 minute walk. We will wait if the bus is late. Another option would be taking one of the myriad of buses that serve Avalon and walk 5-10 minutes. Those coming by car\, can park at the free parking lot in front of the RTL/EIB towers\, which is the meeting point. \n

SUMMARY:Clervaux - Drauffelt (18 km hike)
DESCRIPTION:Starting from Clervaux train station\, we will head south across fields and forests until we reach the village of Drauffelt. There is also a train station at Drauffelt\, so those who so wish will be able to call it a day. The rest of us will turn around north to go back to Clervaux. We will see the town from every angle from up the hills to then visit the castle. Clervaux’ castle permanently hosts the photograph exhibition The Family of Man. I would encourage those who have never seen it to devout at least one hour to visit the exhibition. The rest of us can just have a beer down town. \nThe ups and downs. \nThe L10 replacement bus arrives to Clervaux train station by 10:42. We will wait if it is late. DESCRIPTION:Starting from Grundhof\, where the Schwaarz Iernz meets the Sauer\, we will climb up to the natural reserve of Saueruecht\, one of my favourite spots around Beaufort\, to continue northwards\, high up along the Sauer\, up to Hantges Schleff\, where we will turn back describing a narrow loop. SUMMARY:Ascension to the Erbeskopf (20 km hike)
DESCRIPTION:At the edge of the National Park Hunsrück-Hochwald\, we will discover the highest mountain within an one hour-drive range from Luxembourg city\, the Erbeskopf (816 m). Likely\, also the nearest ski station. Nothing spectacular but it will be a nice hike almost entirely through the forest. \nTo put things in perspective\, the highest point in Luxembourg\, the Kneiff (560 m)\, is also one hour drive from the capital and it does not look like a mountain at all. \nTo find another mountain as tall as the Erbeskopf we would have to go to the Vosges and add\, at the very least\, 40 extra minutes\, each way\, to our trip. \nThe first half is all up\, but it is an ascension of merely 400 m over 10 km. It should not kill us. The good news is that the second half is almost entirely down. Click on the link to have a look to the elevation profile. \nOn the way back (optionally) we can visit the nearby castle of Dhronecken and see if we can get a beer in the village. \nThe carpool link will be provided to the attendees. \n

DESCRIPTION:We have recently started to explore the Natural Park of Gaume and we liked. It is very close to Luxembourg\, pretty flat\, largely unexplored and full of surprises. \nOn the first chapter we explored a couple of Iron Age and Middle Ages archaeological sites starting from Saint-Léger. \nThis adventure will be devoted to magical places in the vicinity of Virton such as Le Trou des Fées (fairies’ hole) or Le Sentier des Songes (path of dreams). \nAs usually in Belgium\, some degree of improvisation is to be expected and paths are often private or otherwise cut. \nThe ups and downs (or lack thereof). \nThe carpooling link will be provided to the attendees in due time. \n

DESCRIPTION:On the first weekend of the Autumn we will be crossing the Geierlay suspension bridge in Germany towards the end of a hike in the area. \nInspired by the Nepalese suspension bridges\, the Geierlay is amongst the ten most visited spots in Germany. \nHowever\, with its 360 metres of length and 100 meters above the river\, twenty percent of the visitors do not dare to cross it. \nNow\, if you decide to come with us\, you better do cross it\, otherwise you will have to take a long detour in order to reach our destination. \nMore details will be provided as the dates approaches. \nThe altitude profile of the route. \n
