DESCRIPTION:The Hunsrück-Hochwald National Park is a national park located in the Hunsrück region of Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland in Germany. The Park was established in March 2015 and is the country’s newest national park\, as well as the only one located in either of the two Bundesländer. The Park protects roughly 10\,000 hectares of upland forests and fields. \nWe will visit the archaeological site of Vorkastell and the wetlands of Ochsenbruch and will climb the Ruppelstein (763 m). DESCRIPTION:On the weekend of the 23rd we are going on an expedition to my beloved Atlantic Ocean. Oh\, do I miss it…\n\nWe will walk along the shore of the Natural Park of Côte d’Opale in northern France and have a sip at every beach. \nA couple of merely illustrative GPXs files (Remember to right-click or press for a second or two in order to download the GPX): \nGPX file I \nGPX file II \nWe will walk along the shore and swim\, that is for certain. Probably both along the façade north and the façade west. The details are to be decided. \nIt will depend on the tides\, if high\, they can make the trails longer\, if low\, shorter. And on the whim of the moment. These are not loops so we can turn around at any time or stay in a place for a couple of hours if we so wish. \nAlso working many kilometres on the sand will be slower and more tiresome. \nSo we are not going to do long distances this time (perhaps 10-15 km per day). \nOn the other hand\, this is as flat as flat can be (min altitude is 0 and max 46 m). \nI would not expect high temperatures in areas so exposed to the Atlantic winds\, but bring sunscreen and something to cover your head. \nWe need to find accommodation at least for Saturday night. Those who wish can arrive on Friday evening. I might be one of them. \nThe carpooling will be arranged in due time. I can take three people. The drive is about four hours and a half. However\, on this occasion we will skip Germany altogether. \nStarting from Schengen\, we will head south along vineyards and magic forests heading to the Stromberg and visiting a few caves along the way. Right across the bridge\, the French town of Sierck-les-Bain will be awaiting us in all its charming decadence. There\, we will walk around the château des Ducs de Lorraine and pay a visit to the Jewish cemetery. \nKeeping our southward course along the river Montenach should lead us to the National Natural Reserve of the same name. Finally\, we will head back north along the ridges and the Altenberg. \nThis is a long hike with continuous ups and downs and therefore it requires a reasonable physical condition. That said\, the elevation gain is very moderate as it ranges from 140 to a mere 330 metres. Furthermore\, improvising\, like we usually do\, in France always involves a fair deal of cross-country segments\, unexpected detours and difficult paths. DESCRIPTION:The Teufelsschlucht Felsenweg 6 was voted the second most beautiful short hiking loop in the entire Germany by the readers of Wandermagazin. \nWe did it on last winter solstice and it was unanimously labelled as “one to be repeated”. Well\, here we go! Back to the Devil’s Valley. \nNo dragons on this one as it is very transited and perfectly signposted. There be dinosaurs\, though… \nI have introduced a couple of minor modifications and enhancements to the original trail. \nThe most relevant one is that we will start from Echternach this time so that people can more easily reach the starting point by using public transport. The designated starting point is right across the river in Germany because finding parking space in Echternach on a weekend can prove challenging. But you can try. \nThere is just one big climb and it is located at the very beginning\, the way up from the Sûre to the ridge\, then we will stay high up till the very end. DESCRIPTION:Under the epigraph “suburban forests”\, last winter we explored the Grünewald quite extensively. We literally walked all the way from home\, from door to door\, a couple of times following different trails. \nOne could think that\, as suburban forest go\, the natural alternative would be Bambësch. However\, we are going to explore a bit beyond that this time. \nWe will start from the parking at Fräiheetsbam (freedom tree)\, at a walking distance from Strassen/Mamer/Bridel\, and will head north-east towards the cave Huel Kimmerchen. Also in the vicinity of Steinsel\, we will also pay a visit to the Roman Temple to then turn west towards the river Mamer which we will follow all the way south\, then east\, until we reach the starting point. \nAs last week\, some legs are not really frequented by hikers which means we can find ourselves in a variety of situations.
